Hello Friends and Neighbors.
On November 5, 2023, I announced my second candidacy for the Texas House or Representatives. I am absolutely thrilled to be back on the campaign trail again.
I am running for the Texas House because I think it is vital that this community be represented by a truly experienced, qualified leader. I hold three college degrees, from three Texas universities, all in politics and law - Trinity University, Southern Methodist University and Texas Tech University School of Law. I have been practicing law in Texas continuously for the past 40 years. When this community elects someone to the Texas House, they are electing an individual to advocate for this community by examining and cross examining witnesses during hearings, and making oral arguments for and against proposed legislation in committee hearings and on the House floor. Our representative must also propose and write laws that are beneficial for McLennan County, and our representative must read and digest approximately 8,000 proposed laws filed by other representatives and determine whether they are good or bad for McLennan County. Our representative must be accountable to and be the representative of all of the citizens of McLennan County, not just those that voted for him/her, when serving in the Texas House.
For the past 20 years, this position has been held by a retired veterinarian. I believe from the bottom of my heart that it is time for this community to be represented by a senior, experienced, respected attorney in the Texas House of Representatives. Of the three candidates that have thus far thrown their hat into the ring, I submit that I am the only candidate that has actually represented people and businesses and I am the only candidate who deals with laws and regulations on a daily basis. My friends, experience matters in this very important role and this community has a lot of catching up to do.
I have been a lifelong student of politics and law. I believe that, especially in these truly challenging times, this community needs an experienced leader who is ready to hit the ground running on day one. The issues before us could not be more daunting. In order for you, the voters of McLennan County, to know my opinions on all of the issues, I will, once again, write and publish bi-weekly columns that will run in the Waco Tribune Herald, the West News and the McGregor Mirror - the three newspapers still printed in McLennan County. I personally write these columns. The subject matter and content are selected totally by me. I will tackle the hard issues of our day - immigration, public education, religious freedom, school vouchers, property taxes, our water crisis and even abortion. I want you to get to know me and understand that I am not afraid to tackle tough issues. These Candidate Columns will let you see not only my position on the issues, but my ability to advocate and communicate those opinions to you throughout the next year. Let's start talking and working together - Democrats, Republicans and Independents - to find solutions to our problems.
I love the campaign trail and look forward to meeting and speaking with as many of you as I can during the next year. As we approach the holidays, the Shank family prays that each of you will have a happy and safe holiday season surrounded by family and friends. God bless you, God bless McLennan County and God bless America.
Let's go win this election for McLennan County!
